A compact robot palletiser solves a specific problem: you want to get pallet stacking off your staff without tearing up your production line to make room for it. Most manufacturers looking at palletising automation for the first time assume it needs a large dedicated area, extra conveyors and a shutdown to install. It doesn’t have to.
What Makes It Compact
A compact robot palletiser keeps everything, robot, gripper, pallet positions and safety guarding, inside a small working envelope rather than spreading the process across multiple stations. That means it can usually go into the same footprint your manual stacking already occupies, with installation measured in days rather than weeks and minimal disruption to production while it goes in.
Two Real Installations, Two Space Problems
At Tycab Australia in Dandenong, the constraint wasn’t floor area, it was the gap available: the cell had to fit between an existing machine and the walkway beside it, with room left for an operator to load pallets safely. A Fanuc M20iA 35M, small in body but with a 1.8m reach, was specced specifically to work in that gap rather than needing a wider footprint.
At Prime Pellets in Elmore, the compact fix was different again: rather than clearing space for a separate palletising cell, the robot was built directly onto the existing stretch wrapper, because there simply wasn’t room to run a standalone system. Same underlying idea, no extra floor space, but solved by integrating with equipment already on site rather than shrinking a standalone cell.
Who Actually Needs This
This isn’t really an option reserved for the low-volume end, it’s for any manufacturer where floor space, not throughput, is the constraint: businesses in existing sheds without room to expand, second and third-generation family operations that have grown into a tight site, or anyone bolting automation onto a line that was never designed for it. A compact robot palletiser is built to work with the space you’ve already got, not the space a bigger integrator would prefer you had.
